Michael Porter is a renowned economist with an interest in not only the business sector but the social sector as well. As an advisor to the US and other governments, he has given an input into economic policies the world over.

An American academic, Michael did not start out as an economist, business strategist, and philanthropist more determined to become an engineer. He received a BSE in aerospace and mechanical engineering from Princeton University and then went on to receive an MBA from Harvard Business School, followed by a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University.

It was the economist’s classes in industrial organization economics, at Harvard University, that had Michael come up with his inspirational five forces analysis framework for analyzing industries.

The author of eighteen books and numerous articles, Michael is not only the six-time winner of the McKinsery Award for the best Harvard Business Review article of the year but is deemed the most cited author in business and economics. Amongst his published books are included The Competitive Advantage of Nations, On Competition, Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance, and Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors. He is also the co-author of a number books and a prolific article writer published in magazines and journals.

But Michael’s interests do not end with economics. Health care is a passion. To this end, he has given considerable attention to both understanding and addressing problems in health care delivery in the United States and other countries. He outlines a new strategic framework for transforming the value delivered by the healthcare system in a book co-authored by Elizabeth Teisberg, Redefining Healthcare. The book was nominated book of the year and received the James A. Hamilton award of the American College of Healthcare Executives in 2007.

In addition to research, writing, teaching, and his responsibilities as a speaker, Porter also:

  • Serves as an advisor to business, government, and the social sector
  • Is or has been strategist and advisor to numerous U.S.-based and international companies, including Procter and Gamble, Scotts Miracle-Gro, Taiwan Semiconductor, Caterpillar, and Royal Dutch Shell
  • Serves on two public boards of directors, i.e. Thermo Fisher Scientific and Parametric Technology Corporation
  • Is active in U.S. economic policy with the Executive Branch and Congress
  • Has led national economic strategy programmes in numerous countries
  • Was a founding member of The Monitor Group strategy firm (sold to Deloitte)
  • Founded three non-profit organisations – Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC), Center for Effective Philanthropy, and FSG-Social Impact Advisors

Michael Porter was appointed University Professor at Harvard in 20000. This is the university’s highest award of recognition awarded to Harvard faculty members.

Amongst Michael’s many achievements are included:

  • Seven-time winner of the McKinsey Award for the best Harvard Business Review article of the year
  • Ranked among the world’s Top Ten Management Thinkers by Thinkers50 every year since 2001
  • Lifetime Achievement Award in Economic Development from the U.S. Department of Commerce
  • 22 honorary doctorate degrees from universities and learning institutions
