Sean Rose is an extraordinary individual. Sean broke his back and was left paralysed following a freak skiing accident in 2000 whilst teaching Royal Air Force pilots to ski. Remarkably Sean didn’t let this hold him back never accepting the word ‘can’t’.

The accolades since his accident are amazing; World Champion Water Skier, World Cup Gold Downhill Ski racer, Winter XGames medalist, Double Paralympian and adventurer.

Sean didn’t ski off a mountain or into rocks, he skied into some slushy snow which gripped his skis throwing him into the air. On landing hard on compacted snow he crushed his vertebrae, causing spinal cord damage and paralysis. ‘I can’t explain the feelings and thoughts that go through your mind other than thinking a lifetime of sport as I knew it had gone.’

The x-ray of his spine looked horrific and he recalls his friends in tears wondering how Sean, a terrific athlete would cope.

The Road Back

The impact and the weight of Sean’s body had crushed vertebrae in his spine. After five operations involving removing vertebrae,  bone grafts, titanium pinning, the removal of a haematoma and nearly two litres of fluid sucked from his lungs the worst was over.

The road to recovery continued at the famous Defence Services Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court. Sean pushed himself to the limits trying to rebuild muscles wasted away from months of bed rest.

Sean regained movement below his injury level as surprisingly his spinal cord was not completely severed. A big moment came when he was able to stand up again though remained unable to walk.

Sean like many others who are placed into unfortunate positions in life  thought; “Why me?” But he didn’t feel bitter.

He knew there were many more people worse off than him and that:  “there wasn’t a lot he could do it about after the accident except give up or get on.” Giving up he saw as “the unenjoyable option and therefore not an option for him.”

As an RAF PT instructor Sean was used to pushing others to reach new levels of achievement. Now he was forced to live and practice the own lessons that he had for so long been teaching to others. He refused to accept the word ‘can’t and wasn’t prepared to let his adversity get the better of him.

In 2013 he retired from competitive skiing as Britain’s most successful alpine ski racer ever. Since paralysis he became; a double Winter Paralympian in Vancouver 2010 and Turin 2006; Britain’s first World Cup Gold Downhill Skier; a Winter X Games medallist and 3 times World Disabled Water Ski Champion. His achievements and death defying antics inspire thousands. Changing your own life is easy but Sean has taken on the role of inspiring others to break their own self inflicted boundaries. “Life doesn’t have to end when you’re in a wheelchair or have other conditions or issues. It ends if you give up!”
