Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner

gerlinde kaltenbrunner
  • First woman to conquer all fourteen global 8,000+ metre summits without the aid of oxygen
  • Vociferous climber, skier, and ice climber
  • Philanthropist involved with a Nepali aid organisation
  • Won the prestigious National Geographic Explorer of the Year Award in 2012

A nurse who saved every penny of her salary to fuel her climbing passion, Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner was the second woman to climb the ‘big 14’ summits, i.e. mountain peaks of over 8,000 meters. What made her feat impressive, was that she did so Alpine style, without the use of oxygen. She is the first woman ever to do so.

Her passion for her sport started at a young age. The parish priest, who had a passion for climbing, would take her on mountain tours from a very young age. She undertook her first climbing tour at the age of thirteen, and after that never missed an opportunity to go mountain climbing. Her main interests at the time, besides studying to become a nurse, were, besides mountain climbing, skiing, and ice climbing.

She was 23 when she had the opportunity to fulfill her dream of climbing a peak of over 8,000 metres – Pakistan’s Broad Peak Precipit standing at a height of 8,027 metres. The thrill of climbing the mountain giants did not leave her after this feat, however, and she started vociferously saving her money to fuel her passion for further expeditions. It was after she climbed Nanga Parbat, her 5th peak of over 8,000 metres, that Gerlinde dedicated herself to becoming a professional mountain climber.

Gerlinde has overcome 14 of these summits, but what makes her feat all the more astounding, is that she did so without the use of oxygen. She is the first woman who has managed to do so. It is interesting to note that she only managed to conquer K2 on her sixth try, with the expedition being filmed by National Geographic.

Gerlinde does not, however, limit herself only to climbing in the Himalayas, but finds herself enchanted by the people of their area as well as their culture and religion. She closely works with Belingries, a Nepali aid organisation. Projects undertaken by this organisation includes the construction of schools, an orphanage, ambulances, a teaching workshop for tailors, and a school for higher education.

Gerlinde encapsulates her life and climbing expeditions in two books that have received wide acclaim.

Araceli Segarra

  • First Spanish woman to conquer Everest in perilous 1996 climbing disaster
  • Model, television and radio personality, author, and children’s illustrator
  • Multilingual presenter fluent in Spanish, Catalan, French, and English
  • Expert in leadership, teamwork, goal setting, organization,  risk management, and wellbeing

Araceli Segarra was the first Spanish woman to conquer Everest, an expedition accompanied and filmed by the IMAX film crew, and in which she starred. The film was simply titled “Everest”. Her feat was precluded by her and her team helping out during the rescue of one of Everest’s worst tragedies in 1996.

The daring Araceli’s mountain climbing career began earlier, when, aged 15 years, she successfully climbed the highest peak in Africa, Mount Kenya. The next year she made her first onslaught on Everest but managed to tackle and defeat the giant only in 1996.

Everest was a goal that emerged after years of progress, and consistent with the mountaineering style that fit with our philosophy. In the fall of 1995, we went to the north face of Everest, the “Horbein corridor” to climb it in pure alpine style, without oxygen, without fixed ropes or porters. We reached 7,800 meters. We were alone, I was 25 years old.

Her work in television does not only see her in front of the camera, but behind it as well, and has been a camera person in the Discovery Channel documentary “Expedition Alaska”, as well as an assistant camera person for “Seven Years in Tibet”, a film starring Brad Pitt. To add to this, she is also active on Catalan Radio and Radio 1, Barcelona.

  • Retail and fashion guru as Government Advisor, businesswoman, retail expert and advertising expert
  • TV personality with her own programmes ‘Mary Queen of Shops’ and ‘Mary Portas: Secret Shopper’
  • Author and owner of Portas and founder of Yellowdoor working for brands including Louis Vuitton, Dunhill, Westfield & Oasis

Mary Portas, dubbed the “Queen of Shops” by the British media, is a force to be reckoned with in the retail industry. Starting her retail career with the likes of John Lewis, Harrods, and Topshop, Mary joined Harvey Nichols, where she climbed the corporate ladder and joined the company’s Board as Creative Director in 1989. The company’s successful transformation into a successful fashion store is accredited to her efforts.

Mary Portas launched Yellowdoor, her own agency, in 1997. The business made its mark in the retail industry with its creative marketing, branding, and client campaign. Amongst these are included Clarks, Dunhill, Louis Vuitton, Westfield, Swarovski, Oasis, and a host of others.

Because Mary wanted her agency to appeal to today’s retail landscape and human behaviour, she relaunched her agency in 2013 as Portas.

Besides her agency, Mary has embarked on a number of personal projects and published a number of books: Windows: The Art of Retail Display, How to Shop, and Shopgirl, a memoir of her early life experiences.

Her weekly column in Telegraph Magazine inspired her television career, highlighting Mary’s efforts to rescue independent boutiques that were failing. Her programme, Mary Queen of Shops, was showcased on BBC2. This was followed, in 2011, by Mary Portas: Secret Shopper, for Channel 4 and the commissioning of other series to follow.

Mary’s transformation of an Orpington shop for Save the Children saw her nominated as the organisation’s Global Retail Ambassador. Her new charity format showcased in her Living and Giving stores have seen the concept adopted across the country.

Mary’s personal experience with the lack of adequate High Street fashion for older women led to the creation of her own shop within House of Fraser. The commercial and critical acclaim received by this endeavor led to the documentary Mary Queen of Frocks.

From there, she went on to revitalise the manufacturing industry by reopening a factory in Manchester and staffing it with handpicked apprentices. “Kinky Knickers’ are now stocked by a number of UK retailers.

Her success brought her to the attention of the British Government who commissioned her to lead an independent review on the future of High Streets. Her plan received the necessary support, seeing Mary act as a catalyst for community regeneration and the re-visioning of high streets across the country.

Mary Portas was awarded a Doctorate of Letters as recognition for her contribution to and advancement of marketing and brand communication in the retail sector.

Gillian Tett – Speaker

Award-winning journalist authority on capital markets, Gillian Tett is known for being able to discern wide stream changes in the economy and anticipating their effects.  The U.S. managing editor of the U.S. Times covers a range of financial, social, economic, and political issues on a global scale.

‘Listen, if you don’t take note of what’s going on, the way that finance has changed so fundamentally, there is going to be an accident.’ – Gillian Tett

Speaking Topics

  • Finance and the economy, domestic and international
  • Geopolitical and the social-political landscape
  • Brexit and its implication for Britain, Europe and wider beyond

Here are some ideas from recent client engagements Gillian has been involved with that have proven valuable to clients in the past and are meant only to suggest the speaker range and interests.

Gillian covers a wide range of subjects. She speaks frequently on the intersection of Politics, Populism and Financial Markets. Her unique perspective, as a behavioural scientist, gives her different insights on financial markets and corporate life in general.

Every talk Gillian gives is based on the briefing so she adapts her remarks for each audience and the issues that are most relevant to each organisation.

Recent talks have included;

Trump, Brexit and the dangers of modern political tribalism
Gillian gives an incisive and illuminating view on the current and emerging forces impacting our world today, both in the US and internationally.

Dazed and Confused: Making Sense of an Uncertain Economy
Gillian gives her views on the current trials and tribulations of the economy — she takes a global view and adds her individual focus on what lies ahead.

The Disrupted World
Today’s world is economically and politically unstable, anti-expert, post-truth, uncertain of its financial and physical borders. Gillan will outline why it is so crucial to take a joined-up view about what lies ahead for the political economy.

Fintech and Financial Markets — the road ahead?
Gillian warns on the trend between increasing reliance on complex financial instruments, the risks of relying on excessively expert experts and a world where fast returns are made on capital. We shouldn’t forget the lessons of a decade ago with Fintech strategies that few truly understood and which led to disastrous outcomes for many.

Why Every CEO Needs an Anthropologist
Gillian outlines the nature of ‘tribal’ behaviour and how organisations work as distinct societal groups. She gives examples where certain organizations developed ‘tunnel vision; and ways to survive this trap by expanding their thinking across boundaries by embracing diversity, holistic thinking and to design system-wide learning.

Silo-busting: a new perspective on why diversity really matters
Diversity has many faces and is an essential part of any healthy organization. She gives prime examples of where this lack of diversity led to catastrophic mistakes and also where it led to improved thinking and decision making. Within this area, Gillian also can talk about the boundary between finance and philanthropy and finance and technology.

Silo-busting; the secret to success in the tech world
Why do some companies succeed brilliantly, but others fail? Why do some executives seem to triumph in business, but others do not? If you ask many tech experts that question, they might point to skills in computer engineering. But as Gillian Tett will explain, citing the examples from well-known firms, that this only explains part of the tale. The other key ingredient which technology experts need to ponder is social engineering — or the importance of cultural and social patterns. And one of the most important of these cultural challenges is the problem created by silos — and the need to overcome this.
