As a World Rowing Champion his Olympic ambitions were destroyed when he broke his neck in two places diving into a river at his own stag party. Adrian’s story of not only overcoming his life changing circumstances but then how he has gone on to coach and motivate others to achieve success is inspirational.
Born in South Africa, to Scottish parents Adrian grew up in South America and at thirteen moved to the UK and attended Shrewsbury School. He graduated with a Biochemistry degree, from University College London with an ambition to row full-time and win a medal in the Sydney Olympics in 2000. He was a gifted rower and became part of the GB Rowing Team from the age of 16, a Junior World Champion at 17 and followed this by attending 7 World Championships as part of GB Rowing Team whilst still a full time university student.
An accident on Adrian’s stag night, in November 1996 put an end to his Olympic ambitions. Adrian’s neck was broken in two places and his dreams going forward were changed in an instant. Paralysed from the waist down Adrian spent six months at Stoke Mandeville Hospital where he married Siobhan.
Adrian recounts that his time spent in Stoke Mandeville was life changing. The incredibly positive environment that he was within helped him to regain the use of his legs leaving minor residual problems that affect him today. With rehab underway and looking forwards, Adrian applied for his first job whilst still in hospital. He began coaching for Cambridge University Boat Club as their first Development Coach in 1997. He was then recruited by GB Rowing to establish its Talent Identification Programme where he identified and developed many of the future Olympic Rowing Champions that won Gold in 2012 and will perform in 2016.
Adrian has played a very significant role in helping to take British Rowing to its position as Number One ranked rowing team in the world. In addition as Chief Coach of Rowing Ireland he coached their first ever female to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
