Alex Gregory MBE is someone who knows all about success and failure. It took him eight long years of trying before he became an Olympic Champion in rowing. He won Olympic Gold medals rowing with Team GB at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
However, according to Alex, by learning to adapt to circumstances and by making the necessary decisions, he was able to turn disappointment into victory. In fact, it was the lessons learned in defeat that laid the foundations for his Olympic success.
Part of his success is attributed to his innate ability in bringing teams together by means of motivation. Alex Gregory has the ability to adapt to other people and to bring out his teammate’s true potential, allowing them, as a team, to succeed beyond their expectations. Being able to adapt and learning from those around him are the true lessons he learned during his years of failure. According to Alex, “…it’s how the skills of those around you are nurtured that counts.”
Alex Gregory has won gold at Olympic, World, European, and national levels. He is the first British male rower to ever hold these titles at the same time.
Despite these feats, Alex decided to join the world’s first Arctic rowing expedition in an effort to push his boundaries and test his mental capacity in a vastly different environment than what he had heretofore been used to. The team had to give up on their dream after complications arose and they landed up stranded on a remote Norwegian island. The crew did, however, manage to break eleven of the twelve world records they had set for themselves. The money raised on the journey was for a remote school in the Himalayas.
Now retired from rowing, the father of three believes in using outdoor activities to create a bond between parent and child. His book ‘Dadadventures’ tells this story.
