Formerly the Prime Minister of Finland, Alexander Stubb is now the Director of the Florence School of Transnational Governance. An avid pro-European, his experience stretches across multiple EU institutions. Amongst these, he counts the likes of the European Council, European Parliament, and European Commission. He was also involved in the negotiations on the Treaties of Amsterdam, Nice, and Lisbon. He is standing for Finland’s Presidency in 2024.*

Alexander Stubbs holds a BA from Furman University South Carolina, USA, a Diplôme de Langue et Civilisation Française from Sorbonne University, Paris, a Master of Arts from the College of Europe, Bruges, and a PhD from the London School of Economics.
Amongst the various political positions held in Finland, Alexander Stubbs counts that of Member of Parliament of Finland and the European Parliament. He has served as the Finnish Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade, and Member of Parliament. His strong language skills and experience in national and international politics make him a strong candidate for President of Finland. He is a convincing advocate for matters important to Finland.
Alexander Stubb became Minister of Finance after serving as Prime Minister of Finland from 2014 to 2015. Upon completing his ministerial term, he became the Vice President of the European Investment Bank. He became the Chair of the Board of Crisis Management Initiative, a Finnish organisation working to prevent and resolve conflicts, during the same period.
Since 2020, Alexander Stubb has been the Director of the School of Transnational Governance at the European University Institute and professor in Florence, Italy.
In 2022, Alexander Stub became a member of the Board of Trustees for the International Crises Group. He is a bestselling author who has written books and articles on European Politics. He is also a regular Financial Times contributor and speaks five languages. A supporter of multiculturalism, he has been a patron of Helsinki’s Pride Parade in support of same-sex marriage.
