Andreas Weigend is an expert on the future of big data, social-mobile technologies, and consumer behaviour. The bestselling author of “Data for the People” and the former chief scientist at Amazon and a member of Germany’s Federal Digital Council, he is also the founding director of the Social Data Lab. He also teaches at Stanford and UC Berkeley and advises startups. Many of the latter were started by his former students.
Regarding his educational background, Andreas Weigend studied physics and philosophy at Karlsruhe, Cambridge, and Bonn, completing his Ph.D. in neural networks at Stanford. Neural networks are the underlying technology of all artificial intelligence. As a result, he did some research at Xerox PARC on language models.
His time as chief scientist at Amazon, and the only chief scientist the company ever had, saw Andreas Weigend regularly meet with Jeff Bezos and Andy Jassy.
Outside of his teaching career and research, Andreas Weigend works with organisations on data strategy in AI. The areas he focuses on include banking, telecommunications, travel, and retail. He advises Zozo in Japan, SCG in Thailand, and various Silicon Valley Startups. He shares his insights at global events.
A member of the German Federal Government’s Digital Council, Andreas Weigend believes that data monopolists need to make the data they use available to all. Data, according to him, has become the global capital of our digital age.
A sought-after international conference speaker, Andreas Weigend illustrates the many possibilities offered by data and what the social data revolution contributes to businesses and society at large. He speaks English and German and lives in the USA.
