French-born Annabelle Gawer is a Professor and Chair in Digital Economy at the University of Surrey Business School. An award-winning researcher, author, and educator, she is considered an expert on digital platforms like Google and Facebook, and on platform-based innovative business ecosystems.
The co-author of two books, Platform Leadership and Platform Markets and Innovation, Annabelle Gawer has written over a dozen articles published in top international journals. Her work has also featured in The New York Times, The London Times, The Financial Times, The Economist, and The Wall Street Journal. Her books and articles have been translated into Chinese and Japanese.
Annabelle Gawer studied in both France and the USA. She is an MIT graduate, obtaining a Ph.D. in Management of Technological Innovation from the MIT Sloan School of Management, and Stanford where she obtained an MSc in Industrial Engineering. Her time at the University of Pierre and Marie Curie Paris saw her obtain a Diplôme d’Ingenieur Civil des Mines and a Maîtrise de Mathématiques Appliquées.
Considered a pioneer of international stature in digital platforms, Annabelle Gawer is a leading voice in advancing research, managerial practice, and European Policy. She is an advisor to the European Commission, the UK Parliament House of Lords, and the OECD on issues relating to the future of ICT research direction in Europe and on online platform regulation.
Amongst the many conferences Annabelle Gawer has addressed, she includes the European Policy EuroCPR Annual Conference, the Academy of Management Annual Conference. The ‘Future of Payment’ Conference, the GSMA “Connect Europe Annual Conference, and the European Commission’s Digital Assembly. She was also the Co-Chair of the first Academy of Management Specialised Conference on Big Data and Managing in a Digital Economy held in 2018.
Her teaching background includes a stint at MIT followed by INSEAD, Imperial College, and Surrey, where she still currently teaches. Annabelle Gawer has a wealth of experience with regards to the teaching of strategy, high-tech strategy, digital platforms economics, and strategy and innovation.
