Bruno Macaes is a former Minister of European Affairs in Portugal. He has represented his country in Brussels during significant events. These include the eurozone crisis, the first Ukraine war, and Brexit. He has, since 2018, authored numerous books primarily centred on geopolitics, technology, and China–Russia dynamics.
Someone who holds a doctorate in political science from Harvard, Bruno Macaes recently completed fellowships at both Renmin University in China and the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C. Furthermore, he has been a fellow at the Wilfried Martens Centre in Brussels since 2020.
After his time in government, Bruno Macaes joined The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP) and the Hudson Institute as a fellow. His thought-provoking analyses of international issues quickly established him as a respected and in-demand journalist. In 2021, he extensively covered the situation in Afghanistan, residing in Kabul during the withdrawal of US and allied forces. More recently, he has reported from Ukraine amidst the Russian invasion. Bruno has shared these experiences through his regular column for the New Statesman.
A bestselling writer, his notable works include ‘Belt and Road’, ‘History Has Begun’, and ‘The Dawn of Eurasia’, The latter analyses the geopolitical and economic ramifications of China’s Belt and Road Initiative and has garnered significant praise. His latest work, ‘Geopolitics for the End Times’, has been noted for its examination of the Covid pandemic. The book is described by ‘The Economist’ as one of the most ambitious explorations of the topic.
Bruno Macaes currently serves as a senior advisor at Flint Global, a top consultancy firm, and is a senior fellow at the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies, affiliated with the European People’s Party in Brussels. Previously, he served as Secretary of State for European Affairs in Portugal. He has done consulting work for some of the world’s leading companies on matters of geopolitics and technology.
