Former US Open Champion Dominic Thiem retired at the end of the 2024 season. He has gone through a few difficult seasons resulting from a wrist injury suffered in 2021.

Dominic Thiem, who hails from Austria, achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 3 in March 2020. He secured a total of 17 ATP Tour singles titles. His 2020 US Open victory was one of the highlights of his tennis career. He made an impressive comeback in the thrilling final, leading to Alexander Zverev’s defeat. This made him the first male player born in the 1990s to win a major singles title and the first Austrian to gain the US Open trophy.

During his career, Dominic Thiem also won three additional major titles and finished as the runner-up in the 2018 French Open and 2020 Australian Open. He was also the runner-up at the ATP Finals in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

His career as a junior player saw Dominic Thiem ranked No. 2 in the world. He was the 2011 French Open boys tournament runner-up who won the prestigious Orange Bowl the same year.

In 2014, Dominic Thiem broke into the ATP Top 100 ranking for the first time. He claimed his first ATP title in France at the 2015 Open de Nice Côte d’Azur. His propulsion into the ATP Top 10 occurred the next year after reaching his first major semifinal at the French Open. This was followed, in 2019, with his first Masters 1000 title at the 2019 Indian Wells Masters where he defeated Roger Federer in the final.

Disaster Strikes

Unfortunately, his career suffered a setback due to a wrist injury in 2021 leading to his retirement from professional tennis at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna in 2024.

In recognition of his achievements, Dominic Thiem is the recipient of the 2020 Austrian Sportsman of the Year Award. This achievement marked the fourth time a tennis player had received this honour since the award’s inception in 1949.

Besides tennis, Dominic Thiem is passionate about sustainability. His particular focus is ocean conservation and environmental issues. He supports the World Wildlife Fund for Nature in Austria and wears the Adidas X Parley Collection. These clothes are made from recycled plastics taken from the ocean.
