Dr. Holger Schmidt is a digital economist and journalist. He studied economics and holds a Ph.D. in climate change.

His journalistic prowess is regularly featured in the German Handelsblatt and Netzhoekon.de. Holger Schmidt also did a stint as economics editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, a daily German Newspaper.

Currently holding a post as a lecturer at the Department of Information Systems as the TU Darmstadt, Holger Schmidt’s topics include the digitalization of business and works, specializing in such areas as digital transformation, platform economics, artificial intelligence, and new work. Holger Schmidt is also the inventor of the platform index and is a senior partner in Ecodynamics.

His journalistic skills have stood him in good stead and have seen him co-author two books on his specific field, Deutschland 4.0 and Künstliche Intelligenz: Mit Algorithmen zum wirtschaftlichen Erfolg. Both of these have been extremely well received.

• Platform economies: Platforms are the central business model of the digital economy. Seven of the ten most valuable companies now work as intermediaries between the supplier and the customer. In my lectures, I explain the economic dimension of the platforms, how they change market mechanisms and how companies can build their own platforms.
• The second half of digitization: After 20 years of digitization, digital value creation is often still low. This is changing with the beginning of the second wave of digitization: platforms are expanding their value creation vertically, startups are attacking traditional industries and “deep tech” is also allowing digital companies to enter previously protected markets such as the automotive, logistics and pharmaceutical industries.
• Digital transformation to the ” Economy 4.0 “: Digitization has finally arrived at the policy level, but with the biggest problems waiting: While most businesses are convinced that digitization will disrupt their business model, only a quarter have responded by developing their own digital business models such as platforms, services, subscriptions or on-demand models.
• Data and AI as drivers of digital business models: After the first wave of digitization, we are experiencing a period of similar high investments, flowing mainly into new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence. With their help, data-driven business models can be developed with which, above all, the industry can develop a variety of service models, from which the Subscription Economy emerges.
• The working world of the future: Technology plays a much bigger role in the world of work tomorrow than it does today. 80 percent of the work – also in offices – can be at least partially automated with today’s available technology. In my lectures, I explain what skills and activities are in greater demand in the future, how companies should organize their work and the importance of continuing education.
• The digital economy: Digitization has many effects on national economies, such as a shift in added value and competitiveness. What We Know: Digitalization will increase growth and slow down inflation. However, the distribution between countries and in societies becomes more unequal and the employees are under strong pressure to change.
• Media change and communication: Information and communication are subject to constant change, which is strongly felt by the classical media. In my lectures and workshops, I explain to companies and executives how modern communication works, how employees train and how social media works better for companies.
• Social media: Even B2B companies are increasingly relying on content marketing and social media to achieve their communication goals. In my lectures and workshops, I discuss strategies for social media, especially in the B2B area. The focus is on the production of high-quality content and how corporate influencers should act.
