Born in Barcelona the father of three children, Joan Laporta has a degree in Law from the University of Barcelona; Master in Corporate Law and Tax Experts at the Institute for Advanced Studies Abat Oliba de Barcelona; Diploma in the course of the Arbitration Law of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona and Diploma course in Corporate Law by Association of Lawyers of Barcelona.
In 2003 a new generation of young and dynamic directors came to FC Barcelona and generated a real shake-up. They popularized the expression “virtuous circle”, which aimed to strengthen the Club economically and socially and prepare the ground for a winning team that would nurture its social dimension.
A number of innovative measures were set up, such as a genuine style of playing football, development of the FCB Academy, promotion of a Catalan and global FCB identity, promotion and development of FC Barcelona Foundation reaching a global alliance with UNICEF and setting up an international network of solidarity centers, Approving modern club operational procedures, policies, and standards, holding Board meetings in different parts of Catalonia while reinforcing communication with the fans through the revitalization of the Barça magazine and a determined drive to promote the Club’s TV station, which took the name of Barça TV.
During Laporta’s mandate, the values which had traditionally characterized Barcelona were strengthened: Catalan identity, public-spiritedness, solidarity and universality.
In Joan Laporta’s seven years as President, FC Barcelona won the World Club Cup, two European Cups, the European Super Cup, four League Titles, the Kings Cup, three Spanish Super Cups and three Catalonia Cups. In the economic and social areas the annual club budget increased from €170 million to €445 million whilst membership rose from 106,135 to 173,701.
The 2006-2007 seasons started with the signing of the agreement with UNICEF, in which the Club committed itself to collaborate economically and in addition wear the UNICEF logo on the shirts of the football team. This was an unprecedented move designed to strengthen the strategy of converting Barcelona into more than a club throughout the world.
He was re-elected as president of the club. With Joan Laporta, a generation of young and dynamic leaders came to the entity who generated a real boost by putting into circulation the expression of the ‘virtuous circle’, which tried to strengthen the club economically and socially, to make a winning team possible and to provide feedback for the social dimension of the entity.
