Dame Kelly Holmes had a childhood that was far from perfect. Because of her mother’s deemed waywardness, Kelly was detached from her roots and brought to London where she was almost given up for adoption. Her struggles as a young child filled her with a tenacity that would eventually bring her to where she is today. At 17, she had already defined two pursuits in life: her career in sports and in the Army.
Kelly Holmes received her MBE nine years after joining the British Army. In 1992, while watching the televised Olympic Games from her barracks, she once again felt the desire to compete. The decision to pursue her running career prompted her to seek professional training, which she paid out of her own pocket while still in the Army. It was during this period that she succumbed to pressure; she started cutting herself and once thought of taking her own life. As an inspirational speaker, she tells a moving story of how one woman’s dream became a goal and a reality.
Kelly would go on to win her first gold at the 2004 Olympics. She finished her celebrated career with 12 major championship medals from the Olympics, Worlds, Commonwealth Games and Europeans. In 2005, she received a Damehood from the Queen.
Today Kelly manages her company Double Gold and her charity Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust. She is also author of a handful of books, including Black, White & Gold and Just Go for it – 6 Steps for Success. Kelly is also active as an inspirational speaker and delights in relating her experiences while imparting valuable lessons such as passion, compassion and the courage to succeed.
A world-class athlete turned entrepreneur and inspirational speaker, she continues to awe and inspire audiences when sharing her life and success story.
