Paul McGinley is a very well known Irish professional golfer. As the first Irish Captain he led Europe to victory over the USA in the 2014 Ryder Cup.
Irish born Paul McGinley had a bright future ahead of him in Gaelic Footballer, until a broken knee cap ended his career at the age of 19. Paul then turned to his other love, golf and the rest is history. He credits his success in golf and in particular his responsibilities as Captain to his time spent playing Gaelic as a team sport.
Paul achieved his place in golfing folklore by holing the winning putt on his Ryder Cup Debut in 2002. He also went on to represent European in 2004 and 2006, making him the first European Golfer to be a winner in every one of his three appearances. Once again Paul showed his skills at team golf when he led the Great Britain and Ireland team to victory in the 2009 and 2011 Vivendi Trophy with Seve Ballesteros, 2009 being in his first experience of captaincy.
Whether it is The Ryder Cup, Seve Trophy, World Cup or Royal Trophy, he has been on a winning team for all of them. Paul also continues to help shape The European Tour as a member of the Tournament Committee.
In his role as Executive Fellow at London Business School, Paul conducts tutorials with degree students, speaks at key institute events and shares his learning and expereinces on leadership and building winning teams with global business leaders. His degree in International Business and time spent working at the European Commission before becoming a golf professional clearly gave him an appetite for the world of education, business and leadership.
Understanding how to translate leadership skills across the world is one of the greatest challenges facing businesses today. Paul has spent the last few years helping international clients understand how to ensure that their own staff are fully motivated and their managers are given a clear view of the roles they play in their company’s success.
As the planning for the 2014 Ryder Cup proved, understanding how to bring together a group of players from different backgrounds and cultures to achieve a winning team required a very unique set of planning skills. Paul ensured every player clearly understood their role and how it fitted into the overall strategy. It proved to be the difference between winning and losing.
“He has just been the most wonderful captain, and I can’t speak highly enough of him, from the first day we got here, the speeches he gave, the videos he shows is, the people that he got in to talk to us, the imagery in the team room, it all tied in together; all part of the plan, all for the cause of trying to win the Ryder Cup, and he was meticulous in his planning. he was amazing.” – Rory McIlroy, Ryder Cup European Team 2014
