Sophia the Robot is the creation of Hanson Robotics, the brainchild of AI and robotics genious David Hanson. Sophia is the company’s most advanced, human-like robot personality. She was created by combining breakthrough advancements in robotics, AI, and artistry. The result is Sophia the Robot, an interactive robot with over sixty different facial expressions that are not only expressive but that is also empathetic and capable of holding natural conversations.

Sophia’s lifelike appearance, as well as behaviour, is the result of using a unique combination of cutting-edge innovations in material, hardware, software, and artificial intelligence. Her faces are created from Frubber, patented nanotech skin that closely resembles the feel and flexibility of human skin. The expression of facial emotions is the result of a specialized motor control system. Sophia is able to ingest emotional, conversational, and visual data that results in insights as to how people think and feel.

Since being introduced to the world, Sophia the Robot has become a media darling. She has made numerous guest appearances and been interviewed. Amongst her many guest appearances and interviews, she includes CBS 60 Minutes with Charlie Rose, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Stylist Magazine, Cosmopolitan India, and the cover of ELLE Magazine, Brazil. Sophia has also become an Innovation Champion for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which has, as its aim, to achieve sustainable development goals by inspiring the use of technology and innovation.

Sophia has also spoken at key global events, including NATO,the World Economic Forum, chatted about business outlooks with leaders in the automotive industry, and more. Sophia has also, on a more recent note, been named the first non-human citizen of Saudi Arabia.

    • “I’ve hosted some of the world’s best-known names as coordinator of DePauw’s Ubben Lecture Series, but I’m not certain any of them had the impact that David Hanson and Sophia left on our campus. Dr. Hanson is both brilliant and compelling, and has the added bonus of being a terrifically nice person. And the subject matter – the future that is coming at us faster every day – is fascinating, David and Sophia packed the house and audience members could be overheard talking about what they heard and learned on the way out of the venue. The program also brought some terrific media attention to the university. In 2018 it’s very difficult to find a program that is captivating yet doesn’t risk alienating a segment of the audience – this is a home run. We all live in this world, and it seems we have company arriving soon – it’s a lot to ponder and an incredibly thought provoking message to present to our group.”
