Elected German Professor of the Year 2008, Ulrich Walter is a full professor of astronautics at German’s Technical University at Munich.
Upon completion of his studies in physics at Cologne University, he went to the University of California, Berkeley, for a year as a postdoctoral student. In 1987 he was appointed as a member of the German team of astronauts. His astronaut training took place at the German Aerospace Centre DLR KölnPorz and the NASA Space Centre in Houston, Texas.
Ulrich Walter became the project leader of the ‘German Satellite Data Archive” of Germany’s Remote Data Sensing Centre of the DLR in 1994. Four years later he joined the IBM Development Laboratory in Böblingen where he assumed the position of Programme Manager in charge of development and consulting for the company’s software projects.
Since March 2003 Ulrich Walter has been associated with the Technical University of Munich. As chair for space and technology at the university, he teaches and conducts research in the field of applied space technology and systems engineering. His focus is on real-time robotics in space and service robots, especially robotics assistance for the elderly. He researches and teaches systems engineering and the empirical science of developing and optimizing complex products and processes in companies. A trained project manager, he also advises companies globally in areas of quality and risk management.
Besides his research, Ulrich Walter has also hosted MaxQ, a public science program on Bavarian television, as well as the German television series “On the Way through Space with Ulrich Walter”. He has also appeared in various television specials on the National Geographic Channel. Ulrich Walter has also, since 2016, hosted SpaceTime, a weekly space documentary on the German News Channel WeltTV.
Prof Ulrich Walter is the author of five books and over 80 scientific publications and numerous scientific and popular articles about space exploration. Since 1998 cooperating with German TV, in January 2011 the program “On the Way into Space with Ulrich Walter” and another popular science program on the National Geographic channel
His many achievements in his field have seen Ulrich Walter receive numerous awards and accolades. These include the Federal Republic of Germany’s First Class Cross of Merit, the Golden Werner von Braun Medal, the Bavarian Order of Merit, and various others. He was also, in 2008, elected ‘German Professor of the Year” in the class engineering sciences and Informatics.
As a keynote speaker, Ulrich Walter has no problem tailoring his talks to his audience’s needs. Making use of dramatic footage, he enthralls his audiences, leaving them wanting more. He lives in Germany and presents in both English and German.
