Vincenzo Nibali retired from cycling after an outstanding career that spanned over a decade. Nicknamed the “Shark of the Strait”, “the Shark of Messina” or simply ‘The Shark’ due to his aggressive cycling style, he is one of seven cyclists who have won all three of cycling’s Grand Tours in their career, i.e., the 2010 Vuelta a España, the 2013 Giro d’Italia, the 2014 Tour de France and the 2016 Giro d’Italia.
His illustrious career has seen him represent various teams. These include Fassa Bortolo, Liquigas, Astana (twice), Bahrain, and Trek-Segafredo.
Many experts in the world of cycling considered him most suited to competing in multistage racing. Vincenzo Nibali was a highly capable descender, a good climber, and a great time trialist. As an all-rounder, many considered him one of the strongest stage race riders of his era. He won the Tirreno-Adriatico in both 2012 and 2013, the Gel Del Trentino in 2008 and 2013, and the Tour of Oman in 2016.
Someone well-known for his Grand Tour performances, Vincenzo Nibali landed on the podium on eleven occasions. He also, however, proved himself to be a great classic cycle race contender. He won the 2006 GP Ouest-France and the Italian National Road Race Championships in both 2014 and 2015, the Giro Di Lombardia in 2015 and 2016, and the Milan-San Remo in 2018. The latter race was highlighted by his unforgettable solo attack on the Poggio.
Vincenzo Nibali concluded his racing career at the end of the 2022 season where he made his final appearance at Il Lombardia. He now works as a technical consultant for Swiss ProTeam Q36.5.
