Winston Wenyan Ma is someone with a variety of credentials. One of very few native Chinese working as investment professionals and capital market attorneys practicing both in the U.S.A. and China, he has been the Managing Director and at the helms of the North American office for China Investment Corporation (CIC). CIC is China’s sovereign wealth fund.
One of the first CIC overseas hires, he was a founding member of the Private Equity Department, later moving on to the Special Investment Department. His time spent with the CIC has seen Winston Wenyan Ma play a significant role in global investments that include technology, energy and natural resource sectors, and financial services. He was also involved in setting up the West Summit (Huashan) Capital. This cross-border growth capital fund, situated in Silicon Valley, was its first tech investment outside of China.
Before his position at the CIC, Winston Wenyan Ma was Barclays Capital’s deputy head of equity capital markets, an J.P. Morgan investment banking vice president, and a corporate lawyer at Davis Polk & Wardwell.
Someone who has served on the boards of both multinational and private companies, Winston Wenyan Ma was, in 2013, named a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum. He has also served as a member of the Council for Long-Term Investing and the Council for Digital Economy and Society. He received the New York University Distinguished Alumni Award in 2014 and has been a member of the university’s President Global Council since its inception.
With regards to his academic qualifications, Winston Wenyan Ma has an MBA from the University of Michigan Ross Business School, a Master of Law from the New York University School of Law, and a BSc and Bachelor of Law degree from China’s Fudan University of Shanghai. He has served as an adjunct professor at three institutions of higher education, i.e., NYU School of Law, NYU Stern Business School, and the Tsinghua School of Economics and Management
